DonateSponsor a Meal for a Kanwariya: Cost, Impact & How to Give

Somewhere on NH-8 tonight, a kanwariya sits down on the ground, folds his tired legs, and is handed a hot plate of rice, dal and sabzi. He has walked for days from Haridwar, barefoot, carrying Ganga jal for Lord Shiva. That meal will cost roughly the price of a single cup of coffee — about 35 rupees — and yet for him it is everything: the strength to rise and finish his yatra to the Shivling. If you have searched for how to sponsor a meal, how to feed a pilgrim, or how much it costs to feed one person, this page answers plainly, and shows you exactly how your gift becomes a plate of food.
What does it mean to sponsor a meal?
To sponsor a meal is simply to pay for the food of someone you will likely never meet. In the context of the Kanwar Yatra, it means funding one warm, pure, vegetarian thali for a devotee who is walking hundreds of kilometres for Mahadev. There is no fanfare and no receipt handed to the pilgrim — he only knows that a plate appeared before him, freely, when he had nothing. This is annadaan, the giving of food, which Hindu tradition places among the highest forms of charity, because it meets a human being at the level of body and soul at once.
How much does it cost to feed one person?
This is the question almost everyone asks, and the answer is beautifully small. At our sewa shivir, about 35 rupees feeds one bhakt a full, satisfying meal — a plate of rice or rotis with dal and sabzi, served hot, with as many helpings as he wants. Because a shivir buys ration in bulk and cooks in enormous vessels with volunteer hands, the cost per plate stays low, and every rupee of your daan stretches remarkably far. It is one of the rare places where a very modest gift produces a whole, complete act of kindness with nothing wasted in between.
- 🔱About ₹35 feeds one bhakt a full meal.
- 🔱₹350 feeds around ten tired pilgrims.
- 🔱₹3,500 can feed a hundred, sustaining the langar through a busy stretch of the day.
- 🔱Any amount helps — there is no minimum, and no plate is ever turned away.
The impact: what one meal really does for a pilgrim
It is easy to underestimate a single plate of food until you understand where the kanwariya is standing when he receives it. He cannot eat at ordinary restaurants — his vow demands pure sattvic food, and many carry little or no money. He has been walking for hours, often through the night to spare his feet the daytime heat, with a sacred kanwar balanced on his shoulder that he will not set down on impure ground. When you sponsor his meal, you are not adding a small comfort to an otherwise comfortable day; you are giving him the one thing that lets his body continue what his heart has vowed. That is the true impact — not a statistic, but a bhakt who reaches his temple because a stranger fed him.
Annadata sukhi bhava — may the giver of food ever be blessed with joy. To feed one who walks for Mahadev is to feed Mahadev himself.
Why feeding a Kanwar pilgrim earns such punya
In the Hindu understanding, few acts earn merit like annadaan offered to one who walks for the Lord. The kanwariya has taken hardship upon himself as an offering; his journey is itself a prayer, carried barefoot toward the jalabhishek of Shiva. To sustain that prayer with a meal is to become a partner in it — a share of the pilgrim's punya flows, quietly, to the one who fed him. The scriptures tell us this merit does not simply add to our own account; it purifies the heart of the giver, softening pride into gratitude. When you feed another out of love, without asking who they are, you touch something of Shiva's own boundless compassion — the compassion of the one who drank poison so the world might live.
How to sponsor a meal online in minutes
The simplest way to feed a pilgrim, from anywhere in India or abroad, is to give online. Visit our Donate page at /donate and complete your gift in under a minute through a secure Razorpay checkout. Pay by debit or credit card, by UPI, by netbanking, or from a wallet — whichever suits you. Choose any amount: enough for one meal, or for dozens. Your daan joins the day's pot of seva at once and is turned, without delay, into ration and hot food. What you sponsor in the morning may well be in a kanwariya's plate by nightfall.
How to sponsor a meal by bank transfer
If you would rather give a larger gift, or you simply prefer a direct transfer, you can send your daan straight to the samiti's account by NEFT or IMPS. Please check the details carefully before sending, and message us on WhatsApp afterwards so we can thank you and confirm it has arrived.

Can you sponsor a meal in someone's name?
Yes, and it is one of the most beautiful ways to give. Many donors sponsor meals in memory of a parent who has passed, in a child's name for a birthday, or in gratitude for a prayer answered. When you donate at /donate, add a short note with the name, or send it to us on WhatsApp. Your loved one's name is then joined to every meal your daan feeds and to every 'Har Har Mahadev' that rises from a pilgrim who eats and is restored. It is a living memorial — not carved in stone, but carried on the road by the strength of someone who walks for Mahadev.
Prefer to give food instead of money?
You can also sponsor meals in kind by donating the raw ration itself. Sacks of atta, rice, dal, oil, sugar, tea and milk all become that day's langar, cooked and served within hours. Cooking gas for the kitchen fires is just as valuable. If you run a shop or a wholesale business, in-kind giving from your own stock is deeply welcome. Message us first on WhatsApp at +91 98189 08237 and we will tell you exactly what the shivir kitchen needs so that nothing goes to waste and everything reaches a hungry bhakt.
A note on tax: this is a voluntary daan
We want to be completely honest with everyone who gives. Shiv Kavar Samiti does not currently provide 80G certificates or any form of tax exemption, and sponsoring a meal will not reduce your taxable income. Please give purely as a voluntary daan, offered from devotion rather than for any tax benefit. In return, we promise every rupee is used directly and transparently to feed the kanwariyas — there is no overhead swallowing your gift, and you are always welcome to visit our shivir and watch your sponsorship become a plate of food.
Sponsor a meal this Sawan
During Sawan 2026 our shivir on NH-8 at Mahipalpur runs from 31 July to 10 August, in the days leading up to Shivratri on 11 August — the busiest stretch of the year, when tired pilgrims arrive around the clock and the kitchen fires never rest. For the price of a coffee you can put a full meal before someone walking for Shiva. Go to /donate to give in seconds by card, UPI, netbanking or wallet, or send a bank transfer to our Punjab National Bank account. Feed one bhakt, or a hundred — every plate carries a 'Har Har Mahadev,' with your name quietly joined to it. Bol Bam.
